Nobody knows how many of those relics of rabbit ear reception will be gotten rid of as Denver undergoes digital conversion. But one thing's for sure, the city is not welcoming discarded televisions with the rest of its trash.
"We don't want TV waste," said Charlotte Pitt, Recycling Program Manager for Denver. "Not only do we not want it going to the landfill, we don't want our trash drivers in the business of picking up televisions."
Still, the job of recycling old televisions is labor intensive and expensive.
"It's going to be $15 for some of the smaller TVs," said Mike Wright, President of Guaranteed Recycling Experts. "And $40 for the biggest sets."
Wright's company is partnering with the city and Best Buy to offer recycling discounts to residents of Denver. A special coupon cuts the cost of recycling a TV between $5 and $30 depending on the size of the set.
"Any size TV with a coupon will cost $10, so that's really a big discount if they've got a large TV," Pitt said.
Wright says the lead content in televisions makes them environmental and human health hazards unless they're properly recycled.
"I've seen TVs lying beside the road, I'm sure you have too." he said.
Pitt says there's enough funding for 1,000 coupons. They're restricted to Denver residents.
The city is also planning a one day collection for old TVs around the end of next month.
