Amendment 51 Supporters Hold Rally At Capitol
DENVER (CBS4) ―
It's not just candidates trying to get out the vote these days. Supporters of various amendments are also on the campaign trail.
Families rallied at the State Capitol Saturday to push for Amendment 51. If passed, it would raise Colorado's sales tax one tenth of a percent in the next two years. That would pay for services for people with developmental disabilities.
Former First Lady Frances Owens says the tax increase is minimal compared to the help it would provide.
"Amendment 51 helps people like Sam, a 4-year-old with autism and multiple physical disabilities who could learn to walk, talk and feed himself and play with other children if he was not waiting for services," Owens said.
Those against the amendment say Coloradans can't afford another tax increase. They also say anyone who wants to help people with disabilities can make private donations.
