Crash Involving Ambulance Kills 1, Injures 3

DENVER (CBS4) ― One person died and three others were injured early Tuesday morning after an ambulance and car collided in Denver, police said. The driver of the car was allegedly driving drunk, police told the Rocky Mountain News.

The accident happened at about 3:20 a.m. in the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and York Street. The ambulance was going westbound with its lights and sirens going when it crashed with a white Cadillac, which was headed northbound. Police said the ambulance had the right of way when the Cadillac ran a red light.

"The driver of the car had a red light, and the ambulance had a green, it's my understanding, as he was speeding through the intersection," said Sonny Jackson with Denver police.

The car came to rest on its top after the collision. The ambulance was spun around and stopped pointing in the opposite direction. The crash was so loud it woke up neighbors across the street.

"The initial impact was what woke us, and then we heard the screeching of the metal and the crunching sound," area resident Reuben Gregory said.

The driver of the Cadillac and another person were both taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The other person, said to be a woman, later died. Investigators said the woman was either walking by or sitting near a bus stop.

"It's looking more and more that she was a pedestrian on the street that was struck by the vehicle after the accident," Jackson said.

The driver of the Cadillac remained in critical condition Tuesday evening and is being investigated for possible vehicular homicide and other charges.

The two people in the ambulance were able to get out on their own, but were taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries and later released.
