15 Air Force Academy Cadets Have Swine Flu

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4/AP) ― At least 15 cadets at the Air Force Academy have swine flu.

The Academy announced the confirmed cases in Colorado's largest outbreak of the H1N1 virus. The Academy announced Thursday that 88 cadets were isolated with flu-like symptoms.

"We are cautiously optimistic. We're taking precautionary measures. We've seen a decrease in the number of cadets presenting following CDC recommendations," said Col. Ken Knight, Cmdr. 10th Medical Group.

Academy spokeswoman Capt. Corinna Jones says that most of the sick cadets are "doolies," members of the incoming freshman class who began training June 25. The cadets began coughing and showing other upper respiratory symptoms last Monday.

The sick cadets are recovering in an isolated dormitory. The rest of the 1,300-person freshman class is washing hands with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

"We have basic cadets come from every state in the country and from across the world. At this time, it's very difficult to pinpoint where it may have originated," said Brigadier General Sam Cox, Commandant of Cadets.

There have been 174 confirmed or probable cases of swine flu in Colorado through July 4.
