World War II veterans were honored in a small, community celebration Saturday at Squires Park in Westminster.
The Rocky Mountain chapter of the 82nd Airborne hosted the event, but many community businesses donated everything from the drinks and food, to specially-engraved plaques that were created just for the half dozen veterans who were present at the picnic and ceremony.
"The event today is to celebrate 65 years ago when D-Day happened," said Chris Mirowski with the 82nd Airborne Unit. "I noticed on the news today, they talked about the landings at Normandy Beach, but they forgot about the paratroopers who jumped in beforehand to support that operation."
The veterans at the celebration were paratroopers.
"They became known as the little group of paratroopers -- the LGOP's," said Mirowski. "The reason why is they were so scattered throughout and the command control was almost non-existent and men were dropped in places where they weren't supposed to be. So, they had to improvise, adapt and overcome."
They were honored with plaques especially engraved for them. They said "We Salute Our WWII Paratroopers Airborne!"
Sixteen million Americans served during World War II according to the Department of Defense. More than 400,000 were killed in the war. As many as 1,000 World War II veterans die each day.
