Wildfire Destroys Vacant Grand Junction Building
GRAND COUNTY, Colo. (AP) ―
Authorities say a wildfire on an island in the Colorado River spread to the riverbank in Grand Junction, destroying a vacant building and triggering the evacuation of 10 mobile homes.
The fire broke out Sunday. Authorities say the cause appears to be a campfire at a transient camp on the island. No injuries were reported.
Wind gusts of up to 60 mph fanned the flames and sent embers from the island into the city, where the building in a salvage yard caught fire and burned down.
Residents of the mobile homes were allowed to return after about three hours.
