UNC Investigates Theater Professor's Conduct

GREELEY, Colo. (CBS4) ― University of Northern Colorado officials said the school is conducting a wide-ranging investigation into allegations that a professor videotaped guests in his home in the bathroom.

Longtime theater professor Raymond Vance Fulkerson was formally charged Friday with one felony count of sexual exploitation of a child, unlawful sexual contact and possession of marijuana. Fulkerson was arrested July 2. The 63-year-old has been placed on leave.

According to Greeley police, a former student staying at Fulkerson's home discovered a video camera in the bathroom and a live feed from that camera in the professor's bedroom.

The arrest warrant states Fulkerson would encourage voice students to sing while urinating.

Friday, UNC President Kay Norton addressed the police allegations. She spoke about complaints from former students who have come forward, claiming that Fulkerson has pressured students sexually for years. Those same students have claimed the theater department has a culture of questionable and sometimes inappropriate relationships between students and faculty.

"Let me be clear, the University of Northern Colorado has placed no limits on the investigation. We will fully investigate Mr. Fulkerson's conduct, as well as how the university responded to the conduct over the years. We will not shrink from the truth, whatever it may be," said Norton.

Norton said that because these allegations go back many years and involve dozens, possibly hundreds, of students, that whatever truth the university finds is likely to be complicated and painful.

"We've got 25 brilliant professors still left there that we've all learned a great deal from and one bad apple cannot spoil the bunch," said Scottie Collins, UNC Student. "We've bonded as a family. We've come together as a family and we're going to get through this and this program is going to be stronger than ever."

UNC spokesman Chuck Leonhardt said the school has hired an independent investigation firm to look into the allegations.

Fulkerson is not allowed to be on campus or have any contact with students.
