Dental Practice Targets Healthy Living
Written by CBS4 special projects producer Libby Smith
DENVER (CBS4) ―
In a small office off Colorado Blvd., Debbie McMahan is fighting gum disease one patient at a time.
"There have been a lot of people I've talked to who haven't been able to get their teeth cleaned because they don't have the finances and they don't have the insurance," McMahan told CBS4.
A dental hygienist for 26 years, McMahan is passionate about clean teeth and gums.
"I love the work," she added.
She's also passionate about helping people. So last November she decided to combine her two passions into one small business.
"Because it's so important to have a healthy mouth."
McMahan is right. In many ways a healthy mouth is key to a healthy body.
Doctors have already made the connection between gum disease and heart disease. Now we're learning that gum disease also contributes to a wide variety of health problems including stroke, respiratory infection, loss of bone mass, uncontrolled diabetes and low birth-weight babies.
So with a single set of equipment and a single dental chair, McMahan started Uptown Smiles.
She targets small business owners, elderly people or anyone without insurance. She offers her teeth cleaning services at a discounted price hoping to keep people coming back for regular checkups.
"Everybody deserves to have good health," McMahan said.
Regular teeth cleaning and good gum care is a big step toward better health, but patients do still need to go to the dentist regularly. You need those exams and X-rays to identify other dental issues.
If you are interested in a low cost cleaning you can contact Debbie McMahan at (303) 321-2745.
