Newly sworn-in Sen. Mark Udall says trying to fix the country's economy is "Job 1."
The Colorado Democrat said in a phone call with reporters Tuesday that the most pressing matter is to put people back to work.
Udall was sworn in Tuesday after serving in the House since 1997. In November, he won the Senate seat vacated by Republican Wayne Allard.
Udall says it may take longer than President-elect Barack Obama wants to pass a $775 billion economic stimulus bill. Obama wants to sign a bill soon after he takes office on Jan. 20.
Udall says he plans to propose bills outlining a comprehensive energy package and designating wilderness areas in Colorado.
He walked down the aisle of the Capitol along with Colorado's other senator, Ken Salazar, who will leave his seat later in January to become Obama's interior secretary.
Denver Public Schools Superintendent Michael Bennet was appointed by Gov. Bill Ritter to fill Salazar's seat.
In the House of Representatives, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi welcomed the Colorado delegation.
Republican Mike Coffman was sworn in as a new congressman. He takes over for Tom Tancredo, who retired.
Also sworn in was Democrat Betsy Markey, who beat out Marilyn Musgrave in November.
And Democrat Jared Polis is Colorado's other new congressman. He won the seat vacated when Mark Udall decided to run for the Senate. He is the first openly gay man elected to the House as a freshman.
