Sentencing Delayed In Colorado Death Penalty Case
CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) ―
Sentencing has been delayed for a man facing execution in the death of an Aurora trial witness.
A judge was expected to hand down the death penalty Thursday for 23-year-old Robert Ray, but Ray's attorneys told the judge that prosecutors didn't give them the information they needed to cross-examine one trial witness.
The judge rescheduled Ray's sentencing for Sept. 10 and said he would hold a hearing next month on the defense claim.
Ray was convicted on two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Javad Marshall-Fields, who was going to testify against him, and Vivian Wolfe, Marshall-Field's fiance. Jurors decided on a life sentence for Ray for killing Wolfe.
Jurors in Colorado decide the penalty in murder cases. Judges formally hand down the sentence.
