Denver School Graduates 100% Of Students
DENVER (AP) ―
The Denver School of Science and Technology held its commencement Friday, and it was a very special graduating class -- 100 percent of them are graduating.
Any student can apply to the Denver School of Science and Technology. They're selected through a random lottery. The only requirement is that 40 percent of them come from low-income families. It's one way of achieving diversity.
Head of school Bill Kurtz said the school's secret to success is built on a foundation of core values.
"Respect, responsibility, curiosity, courage, doing your best and integrity," Kurtz said.
Values are enforced each day, beginning with a morning meeting in which every student has a chance to speak if they wish.
"They do have a real voice here," Kurtz said. "The vote on whether kids return to school after they have been suspended."
Anyone who is late or violates core values or school policy is required to apologize publicly.
In the classroom it translates into students who believe in themselves.
All the 79 seniors are headed off to a four-year college or university.
