Governor Reminds State About Safe Haven Law
DENVER (AP) ―
Gov. Bill Ritter reminded residents about Colorado's Safe Haven Law by declaring Tuesday Safe Haven for Newborns Day.
The Colorado Safe Haven Organization unveiled new permanent signs to be placed at all Denver fire houses to commemorate the day.
The Safe Haven Law was enacted in 2000 and allows parents to anonymously hand over newborns at a fire station or hospital.
"The reality is, if the parent doesn't want to give any information, they're not required, because all we want, we want to provide a safe haven for the child," Chief Nick Nuanes with Denver fire said.
Funding for the new signs was provided by Colorado Waste Management.
It was the eighth annual Safe Haven for Newborns Day.
