5 Years Later, 2 Face Charges Baby Death Case

DENVER (CBS4) ― A man and woman are under arrest following a Denver grand jury indictment that said they were responsible for the death of a 1-year-old girl.

Alexia Montoya, 1, died in October 2003. Her aunt Antoinette Medina and Patrick Romero took care of her after she taken out of the custody of first her mother and then her grandmother. Medina and Romero were arrested and are now charged with:

-- First-degree murder (Romero)
-- Child abuse resulting in death (Romero, 2 charges, Medina, 1)

According to the Rocky Mountain News, the couple initially had claimed Montoya hit her head on a fireplace hearth. Police said she died from head injuries

Denver Police Department's Cold Case unit worked on the case.
