The 5th annual Rocky Mountain Half Marathon has doubled the number of runners this year and the start/finish line moves to a new location. Also new this year, runners can compete virtually, there is a single official charity and runners who do the Rocky Mountain Half Marathon can also compete for a special medal.
"We're really trying to grow the Rocky Mountain Half Marathon into a premier half-marathon in Colorado," said Anton Villatoro, general manager of the race.
Right now nearly 1,700 racers are signed up to run the 13.1 mile course.
"This year we're expecting about 50 percent more runners than last year, so we're really experiencing tremendous growth," Villatoro added.
The race has grown so much that organizers decided to move the start/finish line to Larimer Square.
"So when the runners finish the race there will be an exciting post race party in Larimer Square which will be a nice way to celebrate their finish and a nice place for their family to come down to support them," Villatoro explained.
For the first time this year, you don't have to be anywhere near the start/finish line at Larimer Square to run this race. The Rocky Mountain Half Marathon has partnered up with MapMyRun.com to provide the race virtually.
"The virtual race is a race that we worked on with MapMyRun where we can allow onsite runners to run with someone, a loved one who may not be able to make it to Denver in a virtual sense."
Through MayMyRun.com, racers can map out a half-marathon course wherever they are in the world, register for the Rocky Mountain Half Marathon and after they've logged their race time, they'll get a race t-shirt and medal.
Also for the first time this year, the Rocky Mountain Half Marathon has partnered with one charity organization -- the Ronald McDonald House.
"We wanted to partner with a charity that's really tied into the community and the Ronald McDonald House is certainly one that's doing a lot of exciting things. And with the economy the way it is we felt like we wanted to focus our resources on that one charity."
Runners are encouraged to make a donation when they register online. Also the Ronald McDonald House will be collecting non-perishable canned goods during packet pick-up and on race day.
