More than 100 dogs that authorities say were rescued from a puppy mill in rural Arkansas are headed to Colorado.
The first 15 arrived Wednesday afternoon, flown to the Centennial airport by a volunteer pilot and organization.
The dogs were to be taken to the Denver Dumb Friends League, which says it hopes to adopt them out.
Earlier this week, Humane Society officials said they helped rescue nearly 350 dogs and more than 20 other animals from an 82-acre property in Logan County, Ark. The organization said the dogs were found crowded together in small cages.
"There were more than they could aptly care for so, probably some grooming, some minor medical; we won't really know for sure until we've done a full exam on them once they've gotten back to the shelter," Theresa Geary with the Dumb Friends League said.
Another group of about 100 dogs was expected to arrive in Colorado Wednesday night. Three other shelters -- the Larimer Humane Society, the Humane Society of Pikes Peak Region and the Humane Society of Boulder Valley -- also are planning to help with the animals
