Mullarkey Asks State To Keep $3.1M For Courts

DENVER (AP) ― State Supreme Court Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey is asking state lawmakers to follow through on a pledge to equip new courts.

Mullarkey told a joint session of the Legislature on Friday that counties have spent $191 million on new court buildings. She said the state had promised to spend $3.1 million on furniture and equipment for them.

But lawmakers face the task of cutting $800 million from the state's budget because of a steep drop in tax revenue. Gov. Bill Ritter has said state courts are among services that could get funding cuts.

Mullarkey thanked lawmakers for creating 43 new judgeships in Colorado last year. She said court filings have risen 25 percent and foreclosure filings are up 400 percent since 2000.
