Mexican Consul: Immigrants Leaving Colorado

DENVER (AP) ― With the economy souring and a perceived anti-immigrant sentiment, many Mexican citizens are heading back home. That according to Mexican consul general Eduardo Arnal who says people across Colorado tell him about losing their jobs in the construction and service industries.

Census figures show a nearly 12,000 drop in the Latino population from 2006 to 2007.

Arnal is a former Mexican congressman and member of President Felipe Calderon's transition team who was named Denver's consul general in August 2007.

His office serves Colorado, and he supervises consulates in Wyoming, Utah, Montana, Nebraska, Idaho, South Dakota and North Dakota.

To date, Arnal has visited 59 of the state's 64 counties guaging the sentiment of Mexican immigrants.
