Denver police have identified the car theft suspect and victim in a bizarre car theft on Wednesday. Ryan Calles is in critical condition after he jumped on the hood of his moving car and was thrown to the ground several blocks later, while trying to stop Kim Lucero from taking the vehicle.
Lucero, 26, of Denver was arrested hours later in Douglas, Wyo. after the Nissan Altima broke down. Wyoming State Patrol said she may have been drinking and had drugs in the car. She is being held in the Converse County jail.
It all began Wednesday morning when 31-year-old Calles, grabbed a sandwich at the Subway restaurant located at 3rd and Broadway. Apparently, he left the keys in the car. Police said it was then that Lucero, carrying a small child, jumped into the Altima.
When Calles spotted someone taking off with his vehicle, he jumped on the hood, but that didn't stop the thief.
One witness described the scene, "So he jumped on the hood of the car and she just started taking off and he was still on the hood of the car."
Police said Lucero reached speeds of up to 60 miles per hour as she drove south on Broadway for 13 blocks, with Lucero hanging onto the windshield wipers. When the car reached the intersection at Iowa, police said Lucero made a fast turn.
"She turns the corner, he comes off the car, flies off the car, strikes his head on the cement causing a very serious head injury," said Sonny Jackson with Denver police.
Calles was rushed to Denver Health Medical Center where he's listed in critical condition, according to police.
Calles is originally from New Mexico, but now lives in the Denver area and is connected to an automotive repair school.
A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Lucero and her return to Denver to face charges.
Lucero's 3-year-old daughter was in the car. The girl has been placed in the custody of social service authorities in Wyoming.
