Developer Ends Plan For Former Lowry Bombing Range

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ― A developer that planned to build thousands of homes on the former Lowry Bombing and Gunnery Range has officially withdrawn from the project, citing a lack of water.

Lend Lease Communities LLC said Friday it was terminating an agreement with the Colorado State Land Board to develop about 3,800 acres southeast of Denver. The company warned in October that it would pull out if it couldn't find enough sustainable water for the project.

The land board awarded the project to Lend Lease in 2006 on land held in trust for public education. State officials had estimated that leasing the land could raise $334 million over 20 years.

Acting Land Board Director John Brejcha says many businesses are reviewing investments in the troubled economy.
