Aurora Lighting Strike Hospitalizes 6 Children

AURORA, Colo. (AP) ― Six children seeking shelter under a city park tree during a severe thunderstorm were taken to a hospital after a lightning strike. Aurora Fire Chief Mark Turley says none of the children suffered burns or appeared to have been directly hit by the lighting bolt Friday afternoon. The children, ranging in age from 8 to 15, were in Del Mar Park.

All suffered minor injuries and were expected to recover.

Turley says the children told firefighters they were knocked to the ground by a loud boom.

National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Entrekin says the storm dumped up to 1.22 inches of rain in Denver in about an hour.

Entrekin said thunderstorms also dumped 1-inch hail near Platteville north of Denver and golfball-size hail near Strausburg east of the metro area.
