Boulder Police Say School Bus Driver Was On Drugs

Driver Arrested After Bus Goes Off Road

BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) ― A school bus driver in Boulder is under arrest after an accident on the way to Boulder High School Monday morning.

Police say the driver, Robert Lecy, 62, was under the influence of drugs but they haven't determined whether it was prescription medication or illegal drugs.

Students on the bus told CBS4 they witnessed the driver falling asleep at the wheel and yelled at him to "wake up."

"We were swerving for some reason and the bus driver, what we thought, fell asleep because he wouldn't respond when we were talking to him when we were starting to go off the road," student Conner Bunting said.

The driver has been tested for drugs but officials said the results won't be back for 10 days to two weeks.

Lecy was held at the Boulder County Jail but released Monday afternoon.

"It was just unfortunate. It was jut unintended and unfortunate," Lecy said. "I'm sorry it happened."

Lecy said he was taking prescription medication.

The bus ran off the road at 17th and Canyon and ended up in the front lawn of a residence.

"We heard a big bang and my roommate woke up first and starting screaming my name and I woke up and come out and saw the school bus with a bunch of kids on it sitting in my front yard," said Jay Bresciani, who lives at the residence where the bus stopped.

Seventeen students were on the bus. They were not injured and all went on to school.

Lecy had an unblemished record, according to the Boulder Valley School District and had recently been tested for drugs under the school policy.

"We did driving record tests when they are hired and every year," Bob Young with Boulder Valley School District said. "There was nothing to indicate that there was a problem of any kind."

The bus was impounded for further investigation.
