Rescuers fought unsuccessfully Sunday to save a Thornton teenager who fell through thin ice on a lake at a Commerce City golf course.
Laura Mae Wallace, 19, of Thornton died while trying to save her dogs at the Buffalo Run Golf Course.
Residents in the area told police they tried to throw a long leash to her to pull her out, but Wallace couldn't reach it and went under the water.
Firefighting crews then tried to reach her but Wallace was 30 feet from shore and 20 feet underwater, so they had to wait for the dive team.
"The fire district gets here with their ice capability but as soon as the victim goes under there's nothing more they can do except wait for the dive team and we're so far away it's frustrating for us as we just watch the clock tick as we try to get here safely," said Capt. Daniel Golden of the South Metro Fire Dive Rescue team.
Dive teams recovered her body around 11:45 a.m. and tried to revive her. She was transported to Denver Health by Flight for Life where she died. She was under the ice for about an hour, according to authorities.
Wallace's two dogs were rescued from the water and have been turned over to family members.
Rescue crews say never try to save a pet in a situation like that. Instead, call 9-1-1 and let them attempt the rescue.
