Cherry Creek school administrators are remembering their colleague Eric Kophs who fell off a raft on the Colorado River in Grand County over the weekend and went missing.
"Every part of the Cherry Creek School District is heartbroken," said Superintendent Mary Chesley.
Kophs, 42, the director of elementary education for the Cherry Creek School District, disappeared Saturday while on a fishing trip with a friend.
Chesley confirmed on Tuesday that rescue teams in Grand County called off the search for Kophs, who lives in Aurora.
"Since 1995 Eric has been an important part of the Cherry Creek School District," Chesley said. "He's been a teacher and a principal."
Chesley spoke of Kophs as a warm and dedicated leader.
"Eric has touched so many lives," said Chesley. "Children, adults, families.
We are coming together to extend to Eric's family all the care all the care that he has shown since 1995 to every person he's come in contact with."
Kophs was near Radium, southwest of Kremmling, when he fell into the river and disappeared. He wasn't wearing a life jacket.
The river is running about twice as high as it normally does at this time of year.
