Juvenile Pueblo Inmate Dies, Had Cloth Around Neck

PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) ― Local and state authorities are investigating the death of a 17-year-old inmate found hanging in his cell in the Pueblo County jail.

Sheriff Kirk Taylor released a written statement saying that Robert Borrego Jr. was found dead at 10 p.m. Monday during a routine check. Taylor says Borrego used bedding material to hang himself from a partition.

Deputies and medical staff tried to revive Borrego, who was pronounced dead at the hospital. Taylor says relatives visited the teen earlier in the night. He made a phone call at about 9:10 p.m.

Borrego was facing charges of second-degree assault with a deadly weapon.

The district attorney's office, local and state police are investigating the death.
