Woman Convicted Of Soliciting Hit Man

DENVER (AP) ― A woman was found guilty of using her mother's retirement fund to solicit a hit man online to kill her ex-husband.

Gwen Bergman faces up to 20 years in prison for the scheme that was foiled after one of the two men she tried to hire turned out to be a former Denver police officer who alerted authorities in 2004.

Bergman was found guilty Friday after a four-day bench trial presided by U.S. District Judge Walker Miller. Bergman was offering $30,000 for the hit on her former husband. Police say the 52-year-old woman hired a hit man once before but the man made off with the $50,000 she gave him.

Judge Miller said he was convinced Bergman wanted her ex-husband dead.

Bergman was charged with using interstate commerce, wire transfers, and the mail to commit murder for hire and conspiracy to commit murder for hire.
