Historical Society Steps In, Saves Newspaper

SILVERTON, Colo. (AP) ― The newspaper that has served the historic mining town of Silverton since 1875 will keep on printing after the owner decided to donate it to the local historical society.

Randy Miller of Thirteenth Street Media Inc. has handed over the Silverton Standard & the Miner to the San Juan County Historical Society. Miller sought buyers for the southwest Colorado paper and considered closing it until the paper's editor and publisher, Mark Esper, suggested that the historical society take it over.

The 1,000-circulation newspaper began operating Friday as a nonprofit. The historical society is seeking $10,000 in grants to cover startup costs.

Bev Rich, the historical society's chairwoman, says the newspaper is "very much" a part of the town's history.
