A crowd of people who turned out Thursday in Glenwood Springs to hear Colorado Congressmen Mark Udall and John Salazar talk about energy development on the Roan Plateau wanted more. They're calling for federal legislation to protect the western Colorado landmark from several hundred gas wells.
The environmentalists, elected officials and hunters who sat in on a panel discussion with the Democratic lawmakers say they think a management plan under consideration by the Bureau of Land Management wouldn't protect wildlife and habitat on the plateau.
Steve Smith of The Wilderness Society is asking the congressmen to sponsor legislation barring new leases and development until technology advances to the point where impacts would be minimal.
Udall and Salazar said they set up the meeting after getting a request from area residents. They both say they had no preconceived ideas about whether legislation is needed.
Salazar, whose district covers the Roan Plateau, said he doesn't believe the BLM plan addresses the issues raised during Thursday's meeting. He also said President Bush probably wouldn't sign a bill delaying or barring energy development on public lands.
The Bush administration has made removing impediments to oil and gas drilling on public land a priority in its goal to boost domestic energy production.
