Adams Co. DA Re-Examining Evidence In '87 Slaying
FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) ―
Adams County District Attorney Don Quick is pledging to re-examine evidence from a 1987 slaying in Fort Collins. That includes taking a look into a possible suspect -- a sexual predator -- who wasn't investigated by police at the time.
Tim Masters was convicted in 1999 of killing Peggy Hettrick largely because of violent pictures he had drawn and the fact that he lived 100 feet from where her body was found. Quick's comments are the first time a prosecutor has acknowledged that there could be another explanation for Hettrick's slaying.
Quick's office was assigned to the case two months ago after Masters' lawyers alleged that Larimer County prosecutors had altered or destroyed skin-cell DNA found on Hettrick's clothing. They denied any improper conduct.
An advanced DNA analysis done for the defense found that there was no DNA left by Masters on Hettrick's clothing. It did turn up the DNA profile of another, unidentified man.
