Democrats Choose Delegates To National Convention

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ― Hundreds of Colorado Democratic Party delegates have gathered to choose delegates to go to August's national convention in Denver.

They also held legislative assemblies to pick candidates they hope will keep their hard-won majorities in the state Legislature.

Candidates to the national convention had 15 seconds to make their case.

The convention chose four Obama delegates, one Obama alternate, and one Clinton delegate based on the February precinct caucuses. More than 100 people campaigned for the slots, many of them new to politics. More than 6,000 people attended the event.

"I think there is a big, blue wave sweeping Colorado," Rep. Andrew Romanoff said. "I think it's evident in the crowd behind me; and not just the noise that we're making, but elections that we are winning."

Mark Udall accepted the nomination as Colorado's Democratic candidate for U.S. senator.

"I think this is going to be a big battleground," Romanoff said. "I think this state is on the map of the top 10 battlegrounds in November."

Organizers hope to have the names of the delegates by Monday.
