An emotional Mike Shanahan talked with reporters about slain cornerback Darrent Williams for the first time Tuesday. Shanahan told reporters it would be important for the entire team to attend the funeral for Williams scheduled on Saturday.
He said "that's the sort of thing you do as a family."
Shanahan spent about 20 minutes talking with reporters about Williams and what has happened in the organization since the cornerback was shot early Monday morning.
Shanahan has talked with Williams' mother but words failed when he was asked to describe those conversations.
"I'll probably break up," Shanahan said and added that he might return to that topic but never did.
Shanahan called Williams a great guy and a fierce competitor.
"He was a guy who wasn't afraid of anything," he said. "He was just a guy who looked forward to competing on Sundays."
But the coach also recalled a young man who reached out to the community.
"He did things at the Boys Club and for kids that a lot of times go unnoticed," Shanahan said. "He'll just show up at the Boys Club because he wanted to be with the kids."
Shanahan promised the Williams family will have all the support it needs from the Broncos organization saying whatever Williams' mother felt she needed, she would get.
"I think everybody feels about Darrent like I do," Shanahan said. "I don't think he had a guy who wasn't his friend. That's just the way he lived life. He had a smile on his face."
"You never know why God takes somebody but I know one thing, he got someone very special in Darrent."
