Fit 4 Colorado is a statewide educational initiative to improve the health and well-being of Coloradans. Visit the CBS4 Fit 4 Colorado section.
Coyote Hill Elementary is the November winner of the Fit 4 Colorado School Challenge. CBS4 Meteorologist Stacey Donaldson announced the award during a school assembly. Students cheered as Donaldson presented principal, Jim McDevitt with the $1,000 check.
"It's very humbling to us to win this award," said Lisa Sacino, P.E. teacher at Coyote Hills Elementary School.
The school fosters fitness through special programs like the First Tee Golf program, introducing young children to the game of golf. They also offer intramural and active clubs that focus on sports like soccer, rock-climbing, and snow shoeing.
"It starts at this age, teaching, mentoring, showing an active healthy lifestyle," Sacino told CBS4.
School officials implemented a "Veggie and Fruit Watch" program in the school cafeteria. If a student doesn't grab some fruits and vegetables for lunch, they're reminded that they should be eating a balanced meal.
"For lunch, I always try to pick at least one vegetable and one fruit," said Josh Zambrano, 11, a 5th grader.
The P.E. teachers have big plans for the $1,000 award money.
"We're looking at possibly doing a snowshoe field trip. We love to do field trips with the kids, getting them outside the school. And we've also looked at possibly getting some tennis equipment," said Mike Smith, P.E. teacher at Coyote Hills Elementary School.
