Construction On New Coal Mine May Start In 2010

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. ( (AP) ― Peabody Energy and Twentymile Coal Co. could start construction on the new underground Sage Creek Mine in west Routt County next year.

The new mine would replace production at the Twentymile Mine southwest of Steamboat Springs when operations wind down there, expected in 2013. The new mine would be about five miles southeast of Hayden.

Twentymile Coal Co. environmental manager Jerry Nettleton says the company is planning for a smooth transition to maintain consistent production levels. The Twentymile Mine shipped 8 million tons of coal last year.

The company is seeking its third permit to drill test holes ahead of construction.

Nettleton says Twentymile Coal Co. has 600 employees and an annual payroll of $50 million.
