The school year is well underway and thousands of Denver Public School students have never stepping into a classroom. They're going to Connections Academy a DPS program that's entirely online.
"I feel like I'm learning just as much as I would in a normal school," Roxy King, and 8th grader in Connections Academy.
She logs in from wherever she is and follows a daily lesson plan that's in line with a traditional DPS classroom.
The attraction for King is the flexibility. She's an aspiring actress who travels to Los Angeles during the week for acting classes and auditions.
With Connections Academy she can work at her own pace to fit things in around a busy day in Hollywood.
"I can do twice as much the day before," Roxy said, "Or twice as much the day after."
Roxy's parents are both educators and looked for a program that would keep her on an accelerated track academically.
"The program is challenging," said Kelley King, Roxy's mother.
Her biggest concern was that Roxy would be missing out socially.
Things like ice cream socials are designed to bring the students and teachers of Connections Academy together. Events are held several times a month.
"We have field trips in Denver, Colorado Springs, Pueblo, Grand Junction," explains teacher Kim Swicher.
"All over the state."
Swisher says each student has a different reason for coming to Connections Academy, but the curriculum is standardized through DPS>
"They get their English, Math, Social Studies, all of it," says Swisher.
Online tutorials help students through their lessons. When they have a question the teacher is just a chat box or phone call away.
For Roxy King the virtual classroom allow her to chase her real life dreams while still getting an education.
Connections Academy is free, paid for with tax dollars and it's statewide.
