Denver Judge Accepts Plea Deal In Bloom Case

Limo Driver Pleaded Guilty To Careless Driving

by Kathy Walsh
DENVER (CBS4) ― A Denver District judge accepted the plea agreement between a limousine driver and prosecutors Tuesday. Molly Bloom was in court to speak at the sentencing which means the driver charged with careless driving in her accident will not go to jail.

Molly Bloom lost her left leg and half her pelvis in the incident in May 2006. Bloom was dragged 40 feet as she was trying to get into a limousine on prom night.

Prosecutors charged limousine driver Stanley Sample with careless driving resulting in serious bodily injury. He could have gone to prison for 18 months.

Sample pleaded guilty to the same charge Tuesday, but was sentenced to 150 hours of community service, unsupervised probation and won't pay restitution

"The family has approved of this disposition, Molly thinks this is fair and it's important to say the defendant has accepted responsibility for his conduct," said Zach McCabe, a deputy district attorney.

Sample will also be required to volunteer at a rehabilitation hospital as part of his community service. His attorney said Sample looks forward to volunteering at the hospital.

"I just wanted to say that I think this is fair and I think the community is a good idea," Bloom said in court Tuesday.

It was the first time Bloom spoke publicly since the accident last year.

Bloom's attorney said he has been accepted to college and is ready to move forward with her life.

Bloom will attend the University of Colorado in Boulder in the fall of 2007.
