Evidence Taken From Williams' Case Suspect

by Brian Maass
DENVER (CBS4) ― Investigators looking into the murder of Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams have now taken evidence from a man they suspect was connected to the killing.

Police and prosecutors got a court order to get non-testimonial evidence from the man. At the same time, the man has been trying to negotiate a deal with prosecutors in the case.

More than a month after Williams' rented limousine crashed at 11th and Speer, there has not been an arrest in the case.

The only person connected with the Jan. 1 killing is Willie Clark, 23, who has not been charged in connection with the murder but is jailed on an unrelated parole violation.

Sources say police suspect Clark and several others were in the white SUV that pulled alongside the Hummer limo. Investigators believe passengers in the SUV sprayed the limo with bullets.

CBS4 has learned that a well-known Denver lawyer represents another man police believe was in the SUV.

In recent weeks, multiple sources say the lawyer has been in negotiations with the Denver District Attorney's office, asking for immunity for his client in exchange for testimony against the other men in the SUV.

For reasons that are unclear, those discussions recently broke down and no deal has been struck.

Subsequently, police investigators sought and obtained what is known as a rule 41-1 order, allowing them to get hair, saliva samples and fingerprints from the man who investigators suspect was in the Tahoe the morning Williams was murdered.

Police will examine that evidence to see if they can link the man to the Tahoe and possibly place him at the scene of the murder.

While CBS4 has both the suspect's name and that of his lawyer, neither name is being used because sources connected to the story have suggested using either name could put the man's safety and the case in jeopardy.

The lawyer in question declined to comment on CBS4's report and the Denver District Attorney's office also declined to comment, citing the ongoing investigation.
