COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) ― At least three Colorado Springs area schools were warning their students and parents about an energy drink with a powerful punch.

Several students at Doherty High School experienced symptoms ranging from nausea, to heart palpitations and shortness of breath after drinking the beverage known as "Spike Shooter."

"They of course had this burst of energy," Principal Jill Martin said. "But when they came down they almost couldn't function one girl got wheeled out of the classroom she could barely walk steady."

The fruit-flavored drink has no calories or sugar, but does contain herbal stimulants and high amounts of caffeine.

Doherty High School has banned the drink on campus. Some students who consumed Spike Shooter had to be hospitalized.

"We are banning this drink at DHS for the health and safety of our students," Martin said.

Aspen Valley and Liberty high schools have sent notes to parents about the drink.

Colorado Springs based Biotest Laboratories makes Spike Shooter.

A spokesman said the drink is not intended for children and even adults should test their tolerance to the beverage before drinking more than half a can.
