Grandmother Raises Money For SIDS Research

KEYSTONE, Colo. (CBS4) ― A grandmother in Summit County who lost her 5-month-old son to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome turned the tragic loss into an annual event to help prevent other babies from suffering the same fate.

Freda Nieters, 75, organized the second annual "Ski for SIDS" event at Keystone on Sunday.

Nieters skied 67 miles in about 8 hours last year, setting a world record for the most vertical feet skied in that amount of time.

Several teams volunteered to help her raise money this year.

"I am so pleased because now a lot of people can have a lot of fun together while they help," said Nieters.

The event raised about $30,000 for SIDS research.

Nieters said next year's third annual "Ski for SIDS" event will be held at Winter Park.
