Grandmother Skis To Raise Money For SIDS

by Andrea Lopez
KEYSTONE, Colo. (CBS4) ― A 74-year old woman from Summit County skied non-stop on Wednesday to raise money for Sudden Infant Death Syndrome research.

Freda Nieters was trying to set a world record by skiing 75,000 vertical feet at Keystone Ski Resort which amounted to 38 runs.

"I'm doing this for SIDS because we lost our grandson to SIDS and I hope that we can send a little money for research," Nieters said. "I use my legs and the doctors use their brain and maybe we can save a life."

Her 5-month old grandson Zachary died last year from SIDS.

"We're okay with it, I mean, I know it hurts and going through it again today, it hurts a little bit, but maybe we can do for somebody else to relieve them of this pain," said Scott Meade, Zachary's father.

Nieters drew quite a bit of attention, even thought it was for seconds at a time because she was mostly a pink blur with an entourage trailing behind her.

"I did the 20 first runs and the last 20 were a little hard," Nieters said.

"She's whipping," Meade said. "I skied with her from 7:00 to 9:00 this morning and I used to race downhill and go pretty fast, but I was having a little trouble keeping up with her. She was gone."

Nieters and her family were hoping to raise at least $30,000 for research.

"She's got a good motivation and she's doing a great thing for SIDS," Meade said. "God bless her."

Zachary's parents said the heartbreak of losing their son will never be over but they're expecting a baby girl in June.

The Guinness Book of World Records was at Keystone to monitor Nieters' accomplishment since she could be named the oldest female to ski 75,000 vertical feet in one day.
