New Renewable Energy Facility Opens At NREL

GOLDEN, Colo. (AP) ― Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman helped cut the ribbon Friday on a new facility at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden that is being hailed as a first-of-its kind.

The Science and Technology Facility is intended to speed up efforts to get promising new renewable energy technologies in the marketplace. Officials think the work at the new lab could accelerate the process by as much as 75 percent because companies will have access to state-of-the-art equipment at the lab and the expertise of federal researchers.

Bodman said during the ceremony at NREL that the goal is to bridge the gap between research and industry and more rapidly reduce the country's reliance on foreign energy sources.

The facility is the first new building at NREL in more than a decade. It has been in the works for years and cost nearly $23 million to build.

Bodman said about 30 companies have already expressed interest in working at the lab.
