Crews Search For Missing Hiker In Eldorado Canyon
by Arturo Santiago
BOULDER, Colo. (CBS4) ―
A United States Marine who was home on leave disappeared while climbing with a friend in Eldorado Canyon State Park early Wednesday morning. The search for him resumed Thursday morning.
Lance Hering, 21, of Boulder was last seen at about 3 a.m. Wednesday when his friend went for help after Lance fell and hit his head and lost consciousness.
When his friend returned to where he had left him, Lance was gone.
Ellen and Lloyd Hering joined the search for their son and begged for help, which is something they said Lance would never do.
"He's a very determined, very self-reliant young man," said Lloyd Hering, Lance's father. "He's not in the habit of calling for help. He's a very self-sufficient person and it would be like him to hike out and try to take care of his wound."
Five dog teams and 40 rescuers were helping in the search for Lance Wednesday during the day.
"The difficulty is that if he got partway down drainage or partway down the bowl and fell and lost consciousness, it could be very difficult to spot him," said Sheriff Joe Pelle of Boulder County.
Despite the difficulty, Lance's parents were holding out hope since their son has proven he can beat the odds.
"It's very ironic that he survived all of the combat that he saw in Iraq and has now been injured here at home doing the thing he likes to do best," Lloyd said.
The dog teams had not been able to pick up Hering's scent before the search ended for the night. Some crews did spend the night in the wilderness.
The entire search team was expected to be back on scene at 6 a.m. Thursday.
