Search Grows For Missing Marine Near Boulder
Friends Of Lance Hering Join Search
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) ―
Family members held out hope as rescuers searched a second day Thursday for an injured Marine who apparently deserted the spot where his friend left him to find help.
Lance Hering, 21, of Boulder, was free-climbing on a rock face in Eldorado Canyon when he fell and struck his head late Tuesday, Boulder County sheriff's officials said.
"A strong person can survive three to four days without water and Lance is a strong person," his father, Lloyd Hering said.
His friend Steve Powers, 20, also of Boulder, estimated Hering fell 10 to 15 feet and then rolled about 30 feet down a steep slope. Powers told authorities he stayed with Hering -- a Marine on leave from Iraq -- until his friend regained consciousness before leaving to look for help.
The accident was reported at about 5 a.m. Wednesday.
Rescuers led to the scene by Powers found clothing Powers had used to mark the area but could not find Hering.
About 60 rescuers were closely searching an area of about 5 square miles a day after searching trails and as covering much terrain as possible.
