Two People Infected With Plague In Colorado
DURANGO, Colo. (AP) ―
Plague has infected two people and at least eight animals in Southwestern Colorado this year, health officials said.
"It is widespread throughout Southwest Colorado," said Patsy Ford, a communicable disease nurse with the San Juan Basin Health Department. "So we really want people to take precautions."
Jessica Hamby, 13, who contracted the disease in late June from her dog and was hospitalized with a 104-degree fever.
"The worse part is you can't do anything," she said. "You have to lie down for a long time, and you throw up a ton."
Both she and her dog recovered.
