Light Rail Users Leave New Parking Lots Half Empty
by Michelle Griego
DENVER (CBS4) ―
Since the new southeast light rail lines opened last fall, RTD says many of the lots haven't filled up leading them to give back some of the parking spaces, according to the Rocky Mountain News.
On a typical weekday, figures from the first 3 months of operation show only about 42 percent of the parking spaces along the new southeast light rail corridor are full.
However, those figures can vary widely from one lot to another.
The 9-Mile Park-n-Ride at Interstate 225 and Parker Rd. is typically overflowing because while it's one of the largest lots in the system, the station draws commuters from a wide area. As a result, it's1,225 spaces quickly fill up.
The Rocky Mountain News reported the stations that average less than 1/3 full include University, Southmoor and Arapahoe.
In fact, there are so many spaces available at Interstate 25 and Arapahoe that RTD is planning to give up more than 500 spaces it leased inside a private garage.
The developer wants them back for a hotel project.
Lots that are typically full include Dry Creek, Orchard, Belleview and Yale.
In total, RTD says the light rail lines are averaging 60,000 riders a day.
