Parents: Victim Had Been Threatened Over Testimony

by Rick Sallinger
DENVER (CBS4) ― The family of a woman killed Wednesday night in Denver told CBS4 Friday the victim had been threatened to testify at an upcoming trial.

Kalloniann Clark, 28, was found suffering from an apparent gunshot wound outside a town home in Cherry Creek Friday night. She was transported to the Denver Health Medical Center where she was pronounced dead.

Clark and her husband reportedly tried to get away from the gunman, but Clark was chased out onto the street where she was shot and killed.

Clark was a key witness in the the attempted murder trial of Brian Hicks who allegedly made an attempt on her life. The trial was set to start next week.

Clark's mother and stepfather told CBS4 by phone there had been threats in the past that she would be harmed if she testified at the upcoming trial of Hicks.

"So I guess she felt safe cause I had kept telling her to come on home and just wait and until a court day and come back up there and she said '(Mom) I'm going to be alright because they got him locked up,'" Ann Clark-McKay said.

"She had said they had passed by seven o'clock to check on her, but she feels like she should be in protective custody," Willie McKay said. "They have the husband in protective custody now."

Clark's parents said Denver police told them Clark had signed a document refusing protective custody because she wanted to stay in her own home. Officers had been checking on Clark anyway, including a visit the evening before the deadly shooting, according to her parents.

Hicks, 27, of Denver faces charges of attempted first-degree murder, illegal discharge of a firearm and possession of a weapon by a previous offender in the June 2005 attack, according to court documents.

He has been jailed since Nov. 9 on suspicion of possession of a controlled substance. Bail has been set at $500,000.

The Denver Police Department is offering a $10,000 reward to anyone for information leading to an arrest and conviction in Clark's homicide.
