A 29-year-old teacher at a Denver-area high school has turned herself in to authorities on a charge of having a sexual encounter with a 17-year-old student.
Jefferson County sheriff's officials said
Carrie McCandless surrendered to authorities about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday.
The encounter between the social studies teacher and her teenaged male student allegedly took place in Estes Park on a school trip in October.
Brighton police said the assault report didn't come from the school, but from an inquiring news reporter.
McCandless has been a teacher at Brighton Charter High School for 6 years, also coaches cheerleading and is married to the principal.
She's now out on bond charged with sexual assault on a child by a person in a position of trust and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
McCandless has a court date set for Dec. 6 in Larimer County.
Late Tuesday, police also said that the chairman of the charter school board, David Mundy, was being charged with failure to report child abuse and tampering with a victim, which is a felony.
It's the second time a staffer has been accused of sexual impropriety with a student at the
Brighton Charter High School in the past year.
Earlier this year, a substitute teacher at Brighton Charter High School pleaded guilty to sexual assault on a child for fondling several girls. His name was David Mundy Jr., the charter board director's son.
