Fellow Athletes Swim To Raise Money For Teen
by Jim Benemann
DENVER (CBS4) ―
All through the week swimmers across Denver are helping to raise money for a critically injured fellow athlete.
Molly Bloom, an East High School senior, was injured when a limousine rolled over her on prom night.
During the week, her fellow swimmers of all ages and at all swim clubs are spending one practice doing laps to earn money from donors.
Swimmers at Crestmoor Pool started their fundraiser early Monday morning.
"I sent out emails to most of my close family and since most of them don't live in Denver, I had to explain the story," said Jenny Koff, a Crestmoor swimmer.
Bloom, 17, has been swimming competitively for more than 10 years.
"She was the type of swimmer that she wouldn't always really like it, but you could tell she really loved it," said Maggie Rounds, Bloom's friend.
Normally the swimmers practice to win but several this week said that they are content with practicing to help out.
"We worked hard for Molly and it was fun," said Derek Lewis. "And it was good to work for a good cause."
"It's a day to honor Molly Bloom," said Courtney LeDuc, Crestmoor swim coach. "It's really a neat deal and it's a cool opportunity for them to be a link in this chain and swim for somebody else today."
Sponsors of swimmers at a recent Swim-A-Thon have already donated more than $16,000.
