Express Toll Lanes Ready To Open On I-25
by Lynn Carey
DENVER (CBS4) ―
State and federal government leaders attended a ceremony Thursday to celebrate Friday's planning opening of the express toll lanes on Interstate 25. The lanes will allow solo drivers to use the HOV lanes on I-25 from the Boulder Turnpike into downtown.
Drivers who want to use the toll lanes will need an electronic transponder like the one used by drivers on E-470 and the Northwest Parkway.
Gov. Bill Owens and Acting Federal Highway Administrator J. Richard Capka attended Thursday's ceremony.
The lanes were set to open to traffic on Friday at noon.
Officials said Colorado was becoming one of only four states in the nation currently operating this type of facility. The hope was that the express lanes would ease traffic and maximize the capacity of the highway.
Carpools, buses and motorcycles will continue to use the HOV lanes for free.
