Man Fights Nearly 2 Years For Citizenship
by Raj Chohan
DENVER (CBS4) ―
A man from Jordan who has been living in Colorado for 14 years filed a lawsuit against the federal government. Zuhair Mahd claimed the United States is dragging its feet on his application for citizenship because he's an Arab and a Muslim.
Mahd, who is blind, owns a computer consulting company.
He suspected that his racial and ethnic background was holding up his petition for citizenship.
Immigration officials said one percent of petitions have not been ruled on within the 120 day period required by federal law.
Mahd has been waiting nearly 2 years for an answer to his citizenship application.
"There's a lot of anxiety that we go through, because you're being told that you're under a security check and you know you haven't done anything, you still wonder," Mahd said.
The American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee has started a nationwide push to file dozens of lawsuits on behalf of Arabs and Muslims who've ended up in immigration limbo.
