Tile Sealant Makers Warned Builders, Not Consumers
DENVER (CBS4) ―
After a CBS4 Investigation, homebuilders and remodlers were advised by the maker of a spray-on tile sealant to use a breathing device, while consumers were not.
People across the country have been hospitalized with breathing problems after using the Stand 'n Seal product.
On the label of the can it says 'evaporates harmlessly' and in small letters it says 'avoid breathing vapors,' in small letters.
On the government required material safety data sheet for shipping it warns 'in restricted areas with poor ventilation' and use an 'approved organic cartridge respirator.'
The sheet also reads 'do not breathe vapors'.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission said material safety data sheets are prepared for workers exposed 8 hours a day, 7 days a week., not for consumers.
Roanoke, the makers of Tile Perfect are recalling 300,000 cans claiming a contractor failed to insert a strong odor into the product to warn users to avoid exposure to the vapors.
