Commerce City Residents Upset By Racetrack Idea
by Arturo Santiago
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (CBS4) ―
Residents of a neighborhood in Commerce City protested the idea of building a racecar track near their homes during a city council meeting Monday night. International Speedway Motor Sports recently floated the idea of building a NASCAR style track near Reunion. It also named other possible locations.
People who live in the Reunion neighborhood picketed in front of the Commerce City city hall before the meeting. Many said they were worried about the noise a racetrack would bring.
Others expressed concern about their property values.
"We don't want NASCAR," said Kathy McIntyre.
"It's just way to close," said Dan Gard.
Some members of the city council said they were not aware of the racetrack announcement before it happened last week.
Council members were set to consider a resolution to pursue negotiations with the racetrack company. If approved, it would be put on the ballot for voters during a city-wide election in April.
